Albero a camme, or a cammes (francesismo...). Una camma, singular, camme is, or are, plural! Do not mix up camma with "gamma" which means (besides the greek letter) "range": una gamma di spessori is a range of shims (spesso as adjective is thick, but as an adverb it means often...), so when you adjust the swivel pins you need a range of shims aforehand, to choose from. Havig had to deal with Series since I was 14y-o, I have acquired a good knowledge of English automotive terms; the funny thing is that at LR they never worried about adding in their catalogues translations of the most important words. But they did worry to add an American/English glossary: Silvio

That is because "England and America are two countries separated by a common language." George Bernard Shaw Irish dramatist & socialist (1856 - 1950) I note that Americans are now expected to spell and pronounce 'Aluminium' properly because so many other metals (Cadmium, titanium, etc) end in 'ium'. Now we have to get them to spell 'carburettor' properly

The term marmitta derives from the shape of the silencer, resmbling a type of pot called... marmitta. Some other funnies: freccia = trafficator (colloquial) correctly called "indicatore di direzione", arrow cofano = bonnet, coffer, coffin montante = door pillar, uppercut, principal + interest coppa = sump, cup, a type of salted meat Ciao, Alessio Def 110 CSW 300TDI 1996 (MY1997) It's never over in a Land Rover.

Yes, Alessio, 'cofano' makes sense with pre-WWII cars where the 'bonnet' did look like a coffin. It doesn't make much sense now but neither does 'bonnet' which was a ladies hat rather like that still worn by the Salvation Army. I know that the SA existed in France because my wife's grandfather was the colonel in charge, but maybe in Italy the Salvation Army never got a foothold. ps. my wife's mother converted to Catholicism, although she used to run the Boy Scouts. (I have got completely off the subject by now)

Mi scusi, Eng. 'coffin' = 'bara, cassa da morto'. 'cofano' è un 'faux ami' Jim

Cofano is the word used by professionals to mean a coffin. Some links (touch on wood!): http://www.sarcof.it/ http://www.forgione.it/web/catalogo/catalogo.aspx?CategoryID=000000 Ciao, Alessio Def 110 CSW 300TDI 1996 (MY1997) It's never over in a Land Rover.

This reminds me of the idiom "to have a bee in one's bonnet", which has nothing to do with a noisy engine... Silvio
