DESERT GLASS |

Remarkable discovery in
1932
It's called "Libyan
Desert Glass" (LDG),
found in the sand sea on the Libya/Egypt border.
This natural glass, possibly of meteoritic origin, is one
of the most unusual of all the glasses found.
It is highly translucent, displaying a coloring from
medium gold to olive color.
Although it is sometimes referred to as a tektite,
scientists are still uncertain about its origin.
"Our studies suggest that LDG is the product of
meteorite impact into quartz-rich superficial eolion and
alluvial sand, and perhaps also into quartz-rich
sandstone of the western Desert of Egypt."
This area is included in some of our tracking programs.

Kufra in '95
