Our sources confirm that the new Defender will appear for 2007, which means that it will be out in your local showrooms around a year from now. So why have there been no scoop shots of disguised prototypes doing the rounds? We reckon that there's a very good reason: development testing of the new model has been carried out in extreme secrecy in very secure surroundings a long way from Solihull or Gaydon. The snappers who make their living from selling prototype pictures to the world's motoring magazines wouldn't get within smelling distance of this place * and would probably get their fingers broken on sight. Where? Well, that would be telling. But an important factor is that the new Defender must make an impact in the military market; the old one may well remain in production for a few years yet, but it won't last beyond 2010. So Solihull really needs military versions of the new Defender out there and touting for sales from the word Go. This military pedigree will undoubtedly strengthen the image and the sales of the new model, but we reckon that the civilian models will be as different from the military ones as today's XS Station Wagon is different from a Wolf. We're betting on a lifestyle-oriented machine which can (with the addition of certain options) be turned into a tough off-roader. It's a delicate balancing act, of course. Manufacturers who want to broaden their customer base (read: get bigger sales) typically carry out market research which encourages them to aim for a lowest common denominator among their target buyers. The end result is usually pretty bland. Not so long ago, Mercedes-Benz tried to re-invent itself. It got the products right, but took its eye off the quality-control ball. We've all seen this kind of thing happen in the magazine world, as well. Here's hoping that Land Rover manages to get it right. Jim

Very very funny, Jim: I've never realized that I'm driving a "protezione", or should I say protettore (male gender), which sounds quite bad here in Rome, as a "protettore" is, commonly speaaking, the guy who "runs" whores and so "protects" them! To get the product right should be ottenere i prodotti giusti, not "di destra", which assumes a political nuance: as if there could be a leftist defender. Yes, we have right and left wings in a defender, but nothing to do with parties (political parties, that is, not parties in the sense of Martini and Mr. G. Clooney...). I note equilibratura for balancing act: equilibratura is just the right word for what the tire shop does adding weighs to our rims. Here equilibrio is the word, there's an abstract meaning which equilibratura cannot render, as the latter means a technical, mechanical act. Finally,Babelfish did not get the right meaning for pretty in "pretty bland": it hasn't got a meaning of its own (as carino, nice), but just modifies the following adjective, bland: the right translation could be "abbastanza" blando, "alquanto" blando. Take the eye off: quite literally, distogliere lo sguardo da.Togliere l'occhio sounds pretty (!) awful, something in the style of Captain Hook and other gentlemen of the like... Italian language is a bit less concrete in its metaphors, you do not take your eye off, you distogli lo sguardo It remains a mystery how it could translate the fingers of the "snappers" (sort of paparazzi, a word coined from new to mean the photographers who are on the hunt of cinema stars, as in the Dolce Vita di F. Fellini) as "barrette", little bars, little brackets... When I studied greek and latin, our teacher always told us: non fermatevi alla prima osteria (literally, do not stop at the first "pub"): this meant that you had to read the full entry of the dictionary for a given word, and not just take the first meaning of the list...and sometimes the list was only a few pages long... So I gave Babelfish 'barrette', told it to translate Italian to English, and it came up with 'barrette' So where did it find this word? It's a wonder it didn't come up with 'pesce' for 'snapper'. I know of a fish called a 'red snapper', very nice to eat. 'Snapper' is somewhat derogatory for a paparazzo(sing. ?), a 'snap' is an amateur photo, they used to be taken with a box Brownie. The photos are often called 'happy snaps'. Could be onomatopoeic from the sound of the shutter. I can't really criticise Babelfish, it makes exactly the sort of mistakes that I make - eg. I looked up 'magazine' to see if I would find 'scomparto'. I did notice that the first words given were 'magazinno, arsenale', and the last of the list was 'rivista'. At least here Italian and English agree in the multiple meanings. Ma 'scomparto' non è la. It's not here either: http://www.wordreference.com/it/ So maybe it doesn't exist? Jim

Yes, paparazzo is singular, paparazzi plural. Nothing to do with a Pope on a rocket, even if Papa is Pope, obviously, and razzo a rocket! Snap could be translated with istantanea, but now barely used: a picture taken in a fraction of time, without preparation and with no need of staying still in front of the camera (posa). Arsenale is often used referring to military instalments, quite often naval ones: an arsenale is a sort of ship yard run by the Navy, where to make repairs, maintenance and so on. Arsenale can also be, generically, a depot of weapons. Scomparto could be a section in a shelf; reparto is department. So spare parts department is reparto ricambi, but also magazzino ricambi (generically, magazzino is any place where thing are kept and collected, hopefully in good order). Silvio

Ciao ragazzi, non credo che possa essere come quello indicato da pastorello, se deve mantenere una vocazione militare, le carrozzerie sono sempre molto squadrate, vedi Hummer, Mercedes, i militari hanno sempre bidsogno di spazio, per far cosa poi bo?
